Neymar made a high-profile switch to Saudi Arabia last summer but is now being linked with a sensational return to Europe, with Arsenal rumored to be interested as they hunt for a new forward.
Former Arsenal star Gilberto Silva believes a summer transfer bringing Neymar to the Gunners is “not impossible.”
Since moving to Saudi Arabia, Neymar has had a nightmare spell, playing only a few games for Al-Hilal before suffering a significant injury. He hasn’t featured for the club since, while they went on to dominate and clinch the domestic title.
This marks Neymar’s first year away from European football since he joined Barcelona in 2013, but at 32, he still has much to offer. Known for his prolific career and numerous titles, his compatriot Silva claims a Premier League move is entirely feasible.
“I’d love to see Neymar in the Premier League with Arsenal; it would be interesting, that’s for sure,” Gilberto told Bet365. “It would bring a lot of joy to fans and make the competition even more special. When you look at the Premier League, we want to see the best players in the world, and to have him around would be great. Let’s see. It’s not impossible that he could join Arsenal, why not.”
Arsenal is actively seeking additional firepower this summer but has faced setbacks, such as Benjamin Sesko choosing to stay at RB Leipzig. Their last significant attacking signing, Gabriel Jesus, has struggled to find consistent form.
Neymar, who previously put up staggering numbers, especially during his time at Barcelona, usually plays in a wider role rather than as a central striker, which might not align with Mikel Arteta’s tactical plans.
Earlier in his career, Neymar expressed interest in moving to England, stating: “The Premier League is a championship that amazes me. I like the playing style and the teams. And who knows? Someday, I would like to play [in] it, yes. I admire Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool — these are the teams that are always there fighting.”
Although Neymar will miss the Copa America this summer, he remains determined to make an impact in Saudi Arabia next season following his team’s success without him. On social media, he wrote: “Congrats on an amazing year team, you guys rocked it, and today you outdid yourselves again! Thank you for the titles this year. Next season, leave it to me. LETS GO HILAL. This year Saudi is BLUE.”
