Steve Spurrier Jr. Returns to Florida, Joins Gators Staff in Support Role
Steve Spurrier Jr., a longtime college football assistant and former South Carolina coach, is heading back to familiar territory. According to On3 Sports, Spurrier Jr. has joined the Florida Gators’ staff in a support role, returning to the program where his father, Steve Spurrier, cemented his legacy as a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and a national championship-winning coach.
Spurrier Jr.’s History with South Carolina
Spurrier Jr. spent over a decade at South Carolina (2005-2015), working under his father and playing a crucial role in the development of top-tier wide receivers such as:
- Alshon Jeffery
- Deebo Samuel
- Pharoh Cooper
- Sidney Rice
- Kenny McKinley
During his tenure, he held multiple key positions, including wide receivers coach, passing game coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and co-offensive coordinator. His impact on the Gamecocks’ offense helped shape some of the program’s most successful seasons.

Ties to Florida’s Coaching Staff
Although best known as the son of Florida coaching legend Steve Spurrier, Spurrier Jr. has his own history with the Gators’ offensive staff. He previously worked alongside quarterbacks coach Ryan O’Hara at Arizona in 2004, and now, he will reunite with O’Hara in the quarterbacks room, while handling other responsibilities within the program.
Recent Success at Tulsa
Before joining Florida, Spurrier Jr. spent the last two seasons at Tulsa, serving as offensive coordinator and associate head coach. Under his leadership, Tulsa’s offense ranked top 35 nationally in several key categories:
- Rushing offense
- Red zone efficiency
- Third-down conversions
- Passing yards per completion
However, following head coach Kevin Wilson’s firing in November, new Tulsa head coach Tre Lamb opted for a fresh offensive direction, hiring Brad Robbins as the new coordinator.
Spurrier’s Next Chapter with the Gators
Now back in Gainesville, Spurrier Jr. will look to bring his experience and offensive expertise to Billy Napier’s staff, helping the Gators build for the future.
With his deep SEC experience and strong recruiting background, his addition could provide a valuable boost as Florida looks to regain national prominence.
