Luke Paul Commits to Duke: Blue Devils Land a Dynamic Australian Guard for 2027

The Duke Blue Devils have added another intriguing piece to their future backcourt, as 6-foot-6 Australian guard Luke Paul has announced his commitment to Duke’s 2027 recruiting class.

The commitment comes at an exciting point in Paul’s development. The Australian prospect has spent the past several years building his reputation through international competition, and his most recent performance on the global stage provided a major indication of why Duke was interested in bringing him into the program.

Paul represented Australia at the 2026 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in Türkiye, where he emerged as one of the tournament’s most productive all-around guards. According to FIBA, he averaged 15.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game, while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three-point range.

Those numbers tell an important part of the story, but Paul’s value goes beyond his scoring production.

A Tall Playmaker With Guard Skills

At approximately 6-foot-6, Paul brings unusual size to the point-guard position. Rather than simply being a tall player who occasionally handles the ball, his international statistics demonstrate a strong ability to create opportunities for teammates.

His 7.1 assists per game ranked third in the entire U17 World Cup, an indication of how heavily Australia relied on him to initiate offense and make decisions with the ball.

That playmaking ability could become one of the most interesting aspects of his future at Duke. A big guard who can see over defenses, rebound, push the ball and create for others gives a coaching staff considerable flexibility in how it constructs lineups.

Paul’s production also wasn’t limited to passing. He posted several impressive individual performances during the tournament, including 21 points and 10 assists against Canada in the quarterfinals. In Australia’s bronze-medal victory over Türkiye, he finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Bronze Medal and All-Star Recognition

Australia finished the U17 World Cup with a bronze medal, its first medal at the tournament since 2014. Paul was subsequently selected to the tournament’s All-Star Five, placing him among the five players recognized for outstanding performances throughout the competition.

The recognition adds significant context to Duke’s latest recruiting addition. Paul wasn’t simply part of a successful Australian team; he was one of its central contributors.

He also brings experience from Australia’s national development system. Basketball Australia selected him for the U17 team after he had already produced standout performances at the Under-18 National Championships, including a 38-point game against Victoria Country and a 30-point performance against NSW Country.

Duke Adds Another International Development Story

Paul’s path also fits into the broader development opportunities available to young Australian players. He is part of the NBL Next Star program with the Cairns Taipans, giving him an opportunity to develop against professional competition before eventually moving into the next stage of his career.

That experience could be particularly valuable before he arrives in Durham.

Interestingly, Australian star Josh Giddey has publicly praised Paul’s potential, saying he believes the young guard has the opportunity to become a very good NBA player. Giddey has also identified Paul’s ability to involve teammates and his composure as notable aspects of his game.

For Duke, the commitment represents another international addition to its recruiting pipeline and gives the Blue Devils a large, versatile playmaker to develop for the future.

Paul’s combination of size, passing, rebounding and scoring makes him a prospect with multiple ways to impact a game. His next challenge will be continuing that development against increasingly experienced competition.

But after his breakthrough summer with Australia, Luke Paul arrives at Duke with plenty of momentum and a résumé that already includes international success, All-Star recognition and professional-level development.
